In a study by Robison et al. in the Journal of Clinical Psychiatry, it was found that women with ADHD have more functional impairment than men with ADHD. There were 515 subjects in the study, with 34% being women. More women (75%) had combined type ADHD than men (62%). Women had higher scores on measures [...]

My Wisconsin dialect

I lived in Milwaukee until I was 10 years old, so a lot of the words/sayings I use are Wisconsin-ish. If you’ve ever heard me say “Wisconsin” or “Milwaukee” you can tell immediately that I am originally from there. I say Wisconsin as “W-scon-sin” instead of “Wis-con-sin”, and I say Milwaukee as “M-wau-kee” instead of [...]

The Cadbury Creme Egg Conspiracy

I have to have Cadbury Creme Eggs every Easter. When I watched the commercials as a kid, I thought it was actually a real egg inside the chocolate. I was so grossed out.
But someone (who I really can’t remember, but I should thank them) told me that it was not really egg inside…I hesitantly tried [...]

One of my favorite ads

I love the “Think Different” ad from Apple. (Although I think the correct phrasing would be “Think Differently”. Or maybe using “different” was a subtle way for them to actually be different.)
Here’s the copy from the commercial (and Richard Dreyfuss does an excellent voiceover.)
Here’s to the crazy ones.
The misfits.
The rebels.
The troublemakers.
The round pegs in the [...]

Swan dumps boat…just wants to “be friends”.

Petra is a swan in Germany. She fell in love with a swan-shaped boat. They had so much in common – they were both swans and lived on the same lake. What more does one need? Petra refused to leave the boat’s side. Until…two years into their relationship, she dumped him for a real swan. [...]

The correct usage of “ironic”

It seems that the word “ironic” is cropping up more and more frequently. Except 9 times out of 10 it is used incorrectly. A lot of people use “ironic” to mean that something is kind of out of place or odd.
For example, you tell your friend, “I never liked tomatoes, but I was named the [...]

Study finds higher rate of creativity in children with bipolar disorder

In a study of 40 children who had or were at risk for bipolar disorder scored higher on a measure of creativity than 18 children without the disorder.
All of the children’s parents had bipolar disorder. Half of the children of bipolar parents had bipolar disorder themselves, and the other half had ADHD.
In the measure used, [...]

Happy St. Patrick’s Day!

I hope you had a good St. Patrick’s Day. This is my first St. Patrick’s Day since I found out that I am part Irish. I always thought I was part Irish, especially considering I’m also English and Scottish. How can you have English and Scottish ancestors but not any Irish ones? When I was [...]

Resources for families and friends of suicide victims

Sadly, tonight I had to research information on support groups for a family whose loved one committed suicide. I thought I’d also post the support group contact info here.
Here’s a website that also has a forum for family members and friends:
http://www.survivorsofsuicide.com/
Both support group links on the right don’t seem to be working, But I did [...]

Lecture notes from November 2007 annual CHADD meeting

I’m sorting through all the papers on my desk, hence the previous blog entry regarding an article from the July/August 2007 issue of the Atlantic Monthly, and this blog entry, which is a synopsis of the research lectures at the annual CHADD meeting in November 2007. (Wow, I’m really into run-on sentences today.)
I don’t have [...]
