I've found two guides online for learning more about medication for ADHD. The first is the "ADHD Parents' Medication Guide" (I added the apostrophe to the title...I think it needs one.) It was created by the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (AACAP) and the American Psychiatric Assocation (APA). It can be found here: http://www.psych.org/Share/Parents-Med-Guide/Medication-Guides/ParentsMedGuide-ADHD-English.aspx [...]

I never realized that the Federal Aviation Administration could decline someone from becoming certified if they took certain psychiatric medications - even antidepressants and/or medications for ADHD, or if they had a psychiatric diagnosis such as depression or ADHD. If you have or have had a psychiatric diagnosis or are taking medication, you are required to [...]

In a study by Rosenblum, et al. (2008), children with ADHD had poorer handwriting than non-ADHD children.   Additionally, when children with ADHD were off of their medication, they took an even longer time to copy a paragraph as compared to when they were on medication. Many parents will not be surprised at these study results. (That was my [...]

NS2359 is a mixed monoamine reuptake inhibitor.  A study looked at the efficacy of NS2359 versus placebo in a double-blind randomized trial. There was no statistical difference in the total ADHD-RS scale score between those taking NS2359 and placebo.  However, when looking at the inattentive type of ADHD, 41% of those who took NS2359 had an [...]

ABT-894 is a drug that is currently undergoing clinical trials for possible approval by the FDA for the treatment of adult ADHD.  Drugs have to undergo specific study phases and must demonstrate safety and efficacy before they are approved by the FDA.  ABT-894 is a neuronal nictotinic receptor (NNR) modulator.  NNRs modulate the release of neurotransmitters such as acetylcholine and [...]

By |2016-10-05T06:46:14-04:00April 1st, 2008|Categories: ADHD, Medication, Research|Tags: , , , , , |

Here's another study on how taking stimulant medication for ADHD does NOT increase the chances of substance abuse. People who started taking stimulant medication at 6 or 7 years of age had the same substance abuse rate as non-ADHD people. In addition, people who started taking stimulant medication when they were 8 to 12 years of [...]

Study on misuse of ADHD medications

In the March 2006 issue of Pediatrics, a study led by Dr. Tim Wilens found that people with ADHD were more likely to abuse their stimulant medication than people without ADHD. (One could argue that it could be due to the fact that the medication is much more easily accessed by people with ADHD.) Eleven percent [...]

Antidepressants and effectiveness

A recent study from the University of Hull in England stated that antidepressants only help the most severe cases of depression. In the study, subjects responded just as effectively to placebos as they did to antidepressant medication, except in the more severe cases of depression. The following article refutes the study's findings and gives information on [...]
