SUMMARY:Changing the ADHD Brain: Moving Beyond Medication - Syracuse\, NY
DESCRIPTION:Course Description: \nMany persons diagnosed with ADHD prefer not to take medication. There are various reasons for this including side effects and concerns with long-term use. In this seminar\, you will learn more about these reasons\, as well as alternative interventions for ADHD. \nLooking at ADHD from a developmental perspective\, we will consider reasons for the apparent increase in ADHD diagnoses over the past two decades. By understanding the way the brain works in ADHD\, you will be able to better identify a variety of strategies to significantly impact the nervous system and positively influence symptoms of ADHD in your clients. \nNot only will you walk away with information about some of the most common non-medication interventions for ADHD such as computerized cognitive training\, mindfulness meditation and neurofeedback\, you will also learn a variety of practical strategies that can be implemented immediately and at low cost. \nWe will navigate the vast research on exercise\, movement\, diet\, sleep\, disruptive technologies\, supplements and the impact of the environment on ADHD\, summarizing the findings and applying the information to “real life”. You will leave this seminar with the tools and knowledge to develop a holistic approach to working with adults and children with ADHD. \nObjectives: \n\nRecognize the benefits and drawbacks of non-medication treatments for ADHD versus medication treatment.\nDetermine the most common non-medication treatments for ADHD.\nIdentify the reasons why many patients/clients request non-medication treatments.\nDescribe the safety and efficacy of non-medication treatments for ADHD.\nDetermine whether the benefits of alternative treatments outweigh the costs to the patient/client.\nDiscuss how nutraceuticals/supplements and diet may or may not influence symptoms of ADHD.\n\nOUTLINE \nWhy Not Medication? \n\nUseful as a short-term tool\nConcerns with long-term use: Effects on the brain\n\nADHD and the “Immature” Brain \n\nBrain imaging evidence of ADHD\nResearch regarding ADHD brain development\n\nFrontal lobes mature more slowly in the ADHD brain\nExcess theta brainwaves\n\n\nImplications for treatment\n\nMovement-Based Strategies \n\nWake up an underaroused ADHD brain\nHyperactivity as an adaptive mechanism\nPlay and exercise grow the brain\nRole of rhythm and timing training\nIntegrated movement systems for ADHD\n\nYoga\, martial arts\, qigong\n\n\n\nFrontal Lobe/Working Memory Strategic Tools \n\nUse it or lose it: Brain training changes the brain\nGames for impulse control and working memory\nComputerized cognitive training programs\nMeditation and mindfulness for ADHD\nNeurofeedback: learning to change brainwaves\n\nDiet and Nutrition \n\nYou are what you eat\nImportance of proper sugars\, fats\, proteins and water\nStudies show that proper diets increase dopamine while poor diets decrease dopamine\nOmega 3-6-9: What you need to know for brain health\n\nThe evidence for effectiveness\n\n\nMultivitamins/mineral: Do they make a difference\n\nFood sensitives: the role of gluten\nFood additives\nPesticides\n\nLink with ADHD\nIs organic really necessary?\n\n\nOptimal diet for ADHD\n\n\n\nADHD and Nervous System Overstimulation \n\n”Overaroused” subtype of ADHD\nStress\, anxiety and ADHD: the connection\nBreathwork and movement for nervous system calming\nHeart rate variability biofeedback\nUse a mandalynth to quiet and focus the brain\n\nEnvironmental Influences \n\nVideo games and Social Media\nSleep deprivation\n\nSame symptoms as ADHD\nStrategies to help insomnia\n\n\nEnvironmental toxins: lead\, phthalates\, pollution\nNature Deficit Disorder: time outdoors helps with multiple ADHD concerns\n\nRegister Here for the Seminar!

SUMMARY:Non-Medication Treatments for ADHD - Metairie\, LA
DESCRIPTION:In your practice\, you will find clients/patients with an ADHD diagnosis who prefer not to take medication. There are various reasons for this – and in this seminar you will learn these reasons\, and you will discover what other treatment options are available. The more you know the “whys” of your client’s choice of treatment\, the better quality of care you can provide them. Medications available for treating ADHD\, including the benefits and side effects will be discussed. You will learn the myths surrounding medication\, and how to help your client/patient make the most informed choice about their treatment. \nNot only will you walk away with the most common non-medication treatments for ADHD in this seminar\, you will also know the safety and efficacy of each treatment. This information is very valuable when considering referring a client/patient for ADHD treatment. You will also learn how much these treatments cost\, and if the possible benefits outweigh the financial impact on the client/patient. \nThe use of nutraceuticals/supplements will be discussed – both how they can impact the central nervous system and why it is important to find a producer with good quality assurance. Diet can make a difference in treating ADHD – but not in the way you might think. You will leave with more knowledge about the research purporting a link between pesticides and ADHD. Dr. Sarkis\, a psychotherapist and published author with more than 15 years of experience in treating ADHD\, will show you the path to determining the best ADHD client/patient treatment. \nObjectives: \n\nRecognize the benefits and drawbacks of non-medication treatments for ADHD versus medication treatment.\nDetermine the most common non-medication treatments for ADHD.\nIdentify the reasons why many patients/clients request non-medication treatments.\nRelate the safety and efficacy of non-medication treatments for ADHD.\nDetermine whether the benefits of alternative treatments outweigh the costs to the patient/client.\nDiscuss how nutraceuticals/supplements and diet may or may not influence symptoms of ADHD.\n\nRegister Here for the Seminar!\n
