SUMMARY:The Hidden Impact of Emotional Abuse
DESCRIPTION:Being a victim of emotional abuse specifically leads to a significant increase in depression and post-traumatic stress disorder. As a collaborative professional\, it is imperative that you ask about a person’s history of abuse\, including emotional/psychological abuse. Surviving emotional abuse can impact problem-solving style\, and this needs to be taken into account when determining the best way to help clients.

SUMMARY:2-Day: An Intensive 2-Day Workshop on: Treating Anxiety Disorders in Children & Adolescents - St. Louis\, MO
DESCRIPTION:2-Day: An Intensive 2-Day Workshop on: Treating Anxiety Disorders in Children & Adolescents – St. Loius\, MO\nThe increasing rate of stress and trauma to children\, which includes divorce\, family breakdown\, violence in society\, the media\, and a failing school system\, has produced a “shell shocked” generation suffering from anxiety in many cases. The challenge for clinicians is to recognize anxiety in children and help them cope. \nStephanie Sarkis\, Ph.D.\, will teach you how and why anxiety develops in children and adolescents. She will present practical treatment strategies that can be applied immediately. The seven key anxiety disorders along with case examples to be addressed include: \n\nSeparation anxiety disorder\nPanic disorder\nOveranxious disorder\nObsessive-compulsive disorder\nSocial anxiety disorder\nPhobias\nPost-traumatic stress disorder\n\nOther co-occurring disorders (e.g. behavior problems\, medical conditions\, depression\, ADHD\, learning disabilities\, selective mutism) will also be discussed. Emphasis will be on creative interventions involving insight-oriented\, cognitive-behavioral\, biological\, mindfulness\, expressive arts and family systems approaches. \nObjectives: \n\nApply the “Three Ingredients” template for understanding how\, why and when anxiety develops in children.\nRecognize and modify the sources of stress in children and adolescents.\nExplain the anxiety management skills to use with young clients.\nIdentify effective treatment strategies for each of the seven key anxiety disorders.\nIdentify steps that schools can take to reduce student anxiety.\nApply self-regulation skills and strategies to children.\n\nRegister Here For The Seminar!

SUMMARY:Changing the ADHD Brain: Moving Beyond Medication - Montgomery\, AL
DESCRIPTION:Changing the ADHD Brain: Moving Beyond Medication – Montgomery\, AL\nCourse Description: \nMany persons diagnosed with ADHD prefer not to take medication. There are various reasons for this including side effects and concerns with long-term use. In this seminar\, you will learn more about these reasons\, as well as alternative interventions for ADHD. \nLooking at ADHD from a developmental perspective\, we will consider reasons for the apparent increase in ADHD diagnoses over the past two decades. By understanding the way the brain works in ADHD\, you will be able to better identify a variety of strategies to significantly impact the nervous system and positively influence symptoms of ADHD in your clients. \nNot only will you walk away with information about some of the most common non-medication interventions for ADHD such as computerized cognitive training\, mindfulness meditation and neurofeedback\, you will also learn a variety of practical strategies that can be implemented immediately and at low cost. \nWe will navigate the vast research on exercise\, movement\, diet\, sleep\, disruptive technologies\, supplements and the impact of the environment on ADHD\, summarizing the findings and applying the information to “real life”. You will leave this seminar with the tools and knowledge to develop a holistic approach to working with adults and children with ADHD. \nObjectives: \n\nRecognize the benefits and drawbacks of non-medication treatments for ADHD versus medication treatment.\nDetermine the most common non-medication treatments for ADHD.\nIdentify the reasons why many patients/clients request non-medication treatments.\nDescribe the safety and efficacy of non-medication treatments for ADHD.\nDetermine whether the benefits of alternative treatments outweigh the costs to the patient/client.\nDiscuss how nutraceuticals/supplements and diet may or may not influence symptoms of ADHD.\n\nOUTLINE \nWhy Not Medication? \n\nUseful as a short-term tool\nConcerns with long-term use: Effects on the brain\n\nADHD and the “Immature” Brain \n\nBrain imaging evidence of ADHD\nResearch regarding ADHD brain development\n\nFrontal lobes mature more slowly in the ADHD brain\nExcess theta brainwaves\n\n\nImplications for treatment\n\nMovement-Based Strategies \n\nWake up an underaroused ADHD brain\nHyperactivity as an adaptive mechanism\nPlay and exercise grow the brain\nRole of rhythm and timing training\nIntegrated movement systems for ADHD\n\nYoga\, martial arts\, qigong\n\n\n\nFrontal Lobe/Working Memory Strategic Tools \n\nUse it or lose it: Brain training changes the brain\nGames for impulse control and working memory\nComputerized cognitive training programs\nMeditation and mindfulness for ADHD\nNeurofeedback: learning to change brainwaves\n\nDiet and Nutrition \n\nYou are what you eat\nImportance of proper sugars\, fats\, proteins and water\nStudies show that proper diets increase dopamine while poor diets decrease dopamine\nOmega 3-6-9: What you need to know for brain health\n\nThe evidence for effectiveness\n\n\nMultivitamins/mineral: Do they make a difference\n\nFood sensitives: the role of gluten\nFood additives\nPesticides\n\nLink with ADHD\nIs organic really necessary?\n\n\nOptimal diet for ADHD\n\n\n\nADHD and Nervous System Overstimulation \n\n”Overaroused” subtype of ADHD\nStress\, anxiety and ADHD: the connection\nBreathwork and movement for nervous system calming\nHeart rate variability biofeedback\nUse a mandalynth to quiet and focus the brain\n\nEnvironmental Influences \n\nVideo games and Social Media\nSleep deprivation\n\nSame symptoms as ADHD\nStrategies to help insomnia\n\n\nEnvironmental toxins: lead\, phthalates\, pollution\nNature Deficit Disorder: time outdoors helps with multiple ADHD concerns\n\nRegister Here for the Seminar!

SUMMARY:Ten Best-Ever Anxiety Treatment Techniques - Metairie\, LA
DESCRIPTION:Ten Best-Ever Anxiety Treatment Techniques – Metairie\, LA\nDr. Stephanie Sarkis will assist you in shaping the 10 best-ever anxiety techniques to your needs and will discuss: \n\nHow to apply the techniques in difficult cases\nHow these techniques apply to different age groups\nHow these techniques can help with clients who have co-morbid diagnoses\nHow to use these techniques with groups or individuals and in different types of psychological services: private practice\, hospital units\, classrooms\, nursing facilities\, etc.\n\nThis fresh approach will give you a complete set of tools to work with anxiety symptoms. Cutting-edge research tells clinicians not only what is new\, but also tells us why what we have done best over the years works to help clients achieve positive results in therapy. In this seminar\, you will learn\, practice and be ready to apply 10 techniques that really work to stop symptoms of panic\, worry and social anxiety. \nThese 10 proven methods can control most symptoms of panic\, generalized anxiety and social anxiety. Through in-seminar practice and discussing case vignettes to illustrate their applications – you can make them strong\, effective and lasting interventions. Methods that control physiology: diaphragmatic breathing\, reducing tension\, and mindful awareness to offset panic or acute anxiety can be easy to learn but not simple to apply. We will discuss how to make them effective with different age groups and difficult clients to obtain the best results for calming panic and dread. Likewise\, controlling the cognitive problems of anxiety\, such as catastrophizing or ruminatively worrying\, challenge most with anxiety. Learn powerful techniques that cool off worry\, and challenge faulty cognitions – the obstacles to improving panic and social anxiety. You can help your clients identify and change the ways they avoid their social anxiety. Case examples will clarify planned re-entry to triggering situations\, handling the stress of preparation and conducting ‘in vivo exposure’. \n\n\n\n\n\nObjectives: \n\nUse 10 important techniques that will help your clients “use the brain to change the brain”.\nApply the 4 competencies of stress management to improve health\, quality of life and reduce anxiety\, including lifestyle changes\, cognitive interventions and time management tools.\nEmploy techniques to prevent panic: “Prepare to be there without the scare” and manage panic events so there is less fear of fear.\nDemonstrate how to make breathing really work and utilize relaxation methods in stress rebound.\nIllustrate how memory reconsolidation helps your clients identify their triggers and interrupt the common cognitions that set off panic attacks.\nPractice techniques to interrupt and “erase the trace” of persistent worries and understand how this changes the neurobiology of ruminative thinking.\nApply cognitive interventions to manage perfectionism\, procrastination and rigid approaches to problems.\nSelect techniques for “calm\, competent and confident” approaches to exposures and utilize memory reconsolidation principles that minimize social anxiety and increase successful participation in performance and everyday social experiences for all age groups.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n Register Here for the Seminar!

SUMMARY:Behavioral Treatment of Chronic Pain: Evidence-Based Techniques to Move People from Hurt to Hope - Oak Lawn\, IL
DESCRIPTION:Behavioral Treatment of Chronic Pain: Evidence-Based Techniques to Move People from Hurt to Hope – Oak Lawn\, IL\nWe are in the midst of a nationwide push to treat chronic pain and address our out of control opioid prescribing. SUMMARY:Ten Best-Ever Anxiety Treatment Techniques - Missoula\, MT
DESCRIPTION:Ten Best-Ever Anxiety Treatment Techniques – Missoula\, MT\nDr.
