Amy Winehouse, along with Jimi Hendrix, Jim Morrison, Janis Joplin, and others, has died at the age of 27. Is there a tragic connection between being a musician and the age of 27? Does the so-called “27 Curse” really exist? Read my Psychology Today post here: Why have famous musicians died at 27? Tweet This [...]

Is the ADHD Brain More Creative?

Is it possible that the impulsivity and quick-thinking that accompanies ADHD may also boost creativity? And what role does medication have in that creative process? Does stimulant medication hamper creativity, or boost it? The ADHD brain may not be held back as much by constraints on thinking. In a study by Abraham et al. (2006), [...]

30 Quotes on Healing

Healing, like forgiveness, is a gradual process. Give yourself all the time you need – and play some good music while you’re at it. “All healing is first a healing of the heart.” – Carl Townsend “Although the world is full of suffering, it is also full of the overcoming of it.” – Helen Keller [...]

Creating Simplicity: How Music Fools the Ear

ScienceDaily (2011-01-24) — What makes music beautiful? The best compositions transcend culture and time — but what is the commonality which underscores their appeal? New research suggests that the brain simplifies complex patterns, much in the same way that “lossless” music compression formats reduce audio files, by removing redundant data and identifying patterns. http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2011/01/110120073507.htm Tweet [...]

Charlie Brown and The Cure

I heard the Cure’s “Just Like Heaven” on the radio and thought, “The Charlie Brown Christmas dance scene goes perfectly with this!”  (Isn’t that how everyone’s brain works?) Turn down the sound on the Charlie Brown video and start it at the same time as the Cure video.  Check out the girl in the purple [...]

What I’m watching…

Early this morning I caught the documentary “Yves Saint Laurent: His Life and Times” on the Independent Film Channel.  It’s an interesting look at the relationship between creativity, genius, depression, and addiction.  Even more interesting is that you hear about it directly from Saint-Laurent.  Saint-Laurent started working at Dior when he was 17, and became the head [...]

Mr. Smith Goes to Washington

I highly recommend this movie.  TCM must have been doing a Jimmy Stewart movie marathon. I was in heaven. They even showed The Man Who Knew Too Much, another movie I highly recommend. From 4:29 -4:31, watch Stewart’s hands as Jean Arthur leans back.   Subtleties like that are what made him such a great actor.  Tweet This [...]
